Hungarian dream

I dreamt with it last night. I dreamt with that day when you gave me one of your wiser advices. It was a cold frozen midday and we were in one of our lovely post meals in the middle of the forest. (There does not exist a word in any other language than Spanish for "sobremesa"). We were talking about a difficult situation for me. And you said: Don't do it because of the rest, do it or do not do it for you, because whenever you do something you're not confortable with, or that it's against your values, you will feel miserable. It's that the word which is stuck in my head from that moment: miserable. It's such a powerful word. And like our conversation was, as always, hopelessly, in English, when the advice comes to my mind is in the same language and pronunciation, and the reminder of the word so is. Miserable. I've needed to think about this advice too many times from that day. That means it was a really good and useful one, but it also implies t...

The magic trousers

They are getting too old, but why should that be a reason for throwing them away? My magic trousers. I know that you hate them. You've hated them from the first time when I was wearing the pair, but you didn't tell me that time, there was no confidence enough between us. But after time, it grew and you were sincere, even when I didn't ask you for it. I hate them, I don't like at all the colour and the shape on you, you said. But they were too confortable and close-fitting, and I kept using the trousers a lot. That's how they became magic. Because everything happened while I was on them. They got wet hundred times because of the rain and the snow, they stand me in the bike and with my falls, they celebrated parties and goodbyes, they travelled with me and helped me to reach the top of that castle, they sat on the green grass and got dirty, they were washed in my favourite laundry while I was reading books, they walked and walked on my legs, sometimes even the...

The taste of completeness

The most perfect figure in the world is the circle. There does not exist a better shape with more mathematical properties and results. Put your finger in a point, move it with the same radius according to a centre and form a perfect circunference. Now, try to do the same with your life. Exactly. Why would you like to do it? We are supposed to walk along during the life, following our steps in order to improve, to move away and to create a better ego in the next stop. But most of times, we realize we've been walking in circles. Too often one confirms that the start point is the same as the finish line. And I'm still trying to figure out if in this case that's a good property, or not. The circle can also be used as a metaphor of periods of our existence. I call a period of existence a quantity of time when you are focusing in some specific objective: the period of studying in the university, the period of finding a job, the period of being promoted, the period of hav...

The good girl.

As a girl, you see the world like a giant candy store... ...filled with sweet candy and such. But one day you look around and see a prison. And you're on death row. You want to run or scream... ...or cry. Well, you know, everyone has that feeling some time in his life. The shit comes when you have it every night. You are staring through the window, looking at the sky and sighing, what the hell am I doing here? It sounds always like a hoarse deep voice in your head. You might have in front of your eyes a grey wall, cause your room is a crappy place and there's no nice view in it; or you might be looking at the horizon, probably lighted up with the bulbs of hundred cars; or you may be looking into the dark. But it does not really matter, cause all you can really see is the empty, an infinite empty road with nothing written on it, while you keep wondering, what the fucking hell am I doing here? I guess everyone has the right to feel lost, but we should...

The end of February

I used to have a dream when I was a child. I dreamt that the objects were getting smaller, that the walls of the room were shrinking, making the effect of being in a very big place, and then everything got far, and it seemed even tinier. I used to be in the middle of the room, desperately looking around, trying to stop that change, that movement. And then I used to feel so insignificant. Normally I was not able to distinguish reality and dream. That is what happens with good fantasies. That was the time I was stuck thinking that human beings are nothing and that the world is so big that I make no difference on it. I am somehow still on that point. I also used to worry a lot about money and work, I asked my mum almost every day what would happen if dad would lose his job. My mind, always lost in the future, making plans, trying to control everything, trying to avoid to live the present, because I was not so important for worth it. How could I survive to this? I guess because I didn’t...

Old window

That this life is a bad dream. That the winter and the time are about to finish, and I am becoming more nothing every second. That is what I could say, and I could add ‘Welcome to my nightmare’, and this one is lasting too much, and I can’t stand it anymore. I have changed my room, and I don’t live in the bed anymore. Now I inhabit in the big window, and every hour I touch it, feeling the cold glass. The winter still lives outside, but I have put off the batteries of the white clock; I don’t want to see the minutes running. I have put off all the batteries of my clocks, my heart is now my only one, and it’s ticking so fast and so cruelly. I need to stop it, I don’t want to feel the beating. I’m living in the window because I like to see the birds flying, and I like to think that they feel warm in the air, and I like to imagine their blood, also flying, their warm blood, held so many meters above the ground, and I like to imagine that I am also flying warmly, and that the grey ...

Generalisations

Broadly speaking, people usually assume that scientists are introverted and distant, but that boring stereotype does not have a point. On the whole, scientific people have an original sense of humor, and it seems to me that it is in order to achieve a balance between such a serious field and an entertaining life. For instance, if we look at the History of Maths or Physics, we find a lot of funny anecdotes. Some of them might be unintelligible for ‘normal’ people, but in most cases we can get the view. For example, a quick-witted and resourceful mathematician, who was not a big friend of writing letters, sent a telegram to his father-in-law. It was written just “1+1=3”. That was certainly a short way of telling him the good news: he had become grandfather. Of course, there must be always some exceptions, like the unsocial genius Einstein. Not so far in time, we can also take the Ig Nobel Prizes. They reward research projects that “first make people laugh, and then make them think”....

Train number infinite

Time is moving too fast, faster than trains, faster than the Belgian rain, faster than the frozen wind... Why does the time go so fast? Maybe because we have to realize about its value and to use it wisely. Maybe because we spend too much regreting about it instead of living. Maybe because life is wonderful. The leaves in the calendar are running as quickly as gazelles, the leaves of the trees are falling, and there is nothing we can do to stop them. This is the Autumn of our lives. This is a new season called Youth. No decision will be wrong, there will be no mistakes, because we are young and we are just living. I don't want to take the last train, I don't want to waste my time crying for the end of this travel. We just have to enjoy it, breathe it, smile it, feel it. Right now. And everything will deserve it all. Cause life is worth living.
